This third edition featured an open call, bringing in high-potential solutions and top-tier mentors to join the new cohort. After a huge number of applications and months of evaluation, we can finally say—a new chapter begins!

Let’s welcome Leaplab’s latest cohort: six extraordinary startups from four countries tackling global strategic challenges and unlocking business opportunities with their groundbreaking solutions: EarthTrack, Emidat, FuelHub, Guidewheel, Optocycle, and Sodex.

If you want to learn more, dive into this 5-minute read as we break down the key points from Leaplab’s 3rd edition!

A Closer Look at the Acceleration Program

Major highlight: Graduates of the Cemex Ventures Leaplab Program have the potential opportunity to secure Commercial Agreements with one or more Cemex business units. Moreover, if there are positive pilot results and scalability potential, it could open the door to investment considerations from Cemex Ventures.

From seed to success: What is a startup accelerator? https://www.cemexventures.com/startup-accelerator-what-is/ Tue, 08 Aug 2023 07:00:34 +0000 https://www.cemexventures.com/?p=97632

Startup acceleration is a tool for entrepreneurs to gain a competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive and crowded ecosystem. Consider Newton’s first law of motion – “An object in motion remains in motion at constant speed unless acted on by an unbalanced force.”

Unless acted upon by an external force (accelerator program), many startups don’t see the rapid success and return on investment they initially hoped for. Acceleration programs act as a catalyst, a jolt, a foreign force to shift startups from slow progression to rapid escalation.

For this reason, startup acceleration programs have become a popular option for startups to differentiate themselves from the crowd. In this article, we will explore what a startup accelerator program is, how they differ from incubators, what percentage of equity they take, and what their benefits are. We will also discuss how our accelerator (Leaplab) has real long-lasting benefits to help your startup succeed.

Table of Contents

What are startup accelerators?

Starting with the basics, startup accelerators are programs that help early-stage startups grow and scale their businesses. Accelerators are cohort-based and usually run for a three-to-six-month period. They are often led by experienced entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts who provide guidance and support to the startups in the program.

In return for acceleration services, startups must:

  • Be established and in their early phase (preferably having already completed pre-seed to seed fundraising status),
  • Have a minimum viable product (MVP),
  • Be scalable, and
  • Have a collaborative and coachable team.
Image of a man accelerating to represent the push that accelerators give to startups.

What startup accelerators really do

The goal is in the name: startup accelerators exist to accelerate your startup’s growth. Because of their notably short durations, startup accelerators allow entrepreneurs to take what normally takes years worth of learning and work and streamline it into just a few months with an emphasis on learning by doing.

In short, startup accelerators provide:

  • Piloting: Real-scale testing and validation of solutions.
  • Expert support: Mentoring, educational resources, and services, etc.
  • Industry engagement: Engagement with industry leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Networking & resources: Networking opportunities with other entrepreneurs, investment, partnership/collaboration agreements, etc.

Accelerators vs. Incubators

While startup accelerators and incubators are often used interchangeably, they are actually quite different.

Image of an upward staircase representing the rise to success that startup accelerators can provide.

What percentage of equity do accelerators take?

Not all accelerators take a percentage of equity (such as the Leaplab Acceleration Program), however, some may take a percentage of equity in the startups they work with in exchange for seed funding and/or the resources and support they provide. This percentage can vary depending on the program; however, some programs negotiate other discounts should the startup and accelerator program host decide to enter into a commercial agreement.

While this may be a sensitive topic to some entrepreneurs, it’s important to remember that the resources and support provided by accelerators can be invaluable to the long-term success of early-stage startups.

Are startup accelerators worth it?

You might be weighing the pros and cons of joining a startup accelerator program. On the one hand, accelerators can provide startups with a range of resources and support that can help them grow and scale their businesses. On the other hand, the equity that accelerators take can be a drawback for some.

Let the facts speak for themselves. Startup accelerators have a proven success rate and can help you grow in several different areas

  1. Business model & strategy
  2. Leadership & team
  3. User-centered design
  4. Technology
  5. Compliance
  6. Relational capital
  7. Networking

Why do you need an accelerator?

Startup accelerators offer numerous benefits for both startups and corporations, making them a valuable investment and collaboration opportunity.

Here are some key reasons why they are worth it for both parties:

For startups

  • Access to expertise: Accelerators provide startups with access to a network of experienced mentors, industry experts, and successful entrepreneurs. These experts offer guidance, feedback, and valuable insights to help startups refine their business strategies and navigate challenges effectively.
  • Funding opportunities: Many accelerators offer seed funding or connections to investors, which can be crucial for startups to scale their operations and bring their ideas to life.
  • Validation & credibility: Participation in a reputable accelerator program can enhance a startup’s credibility and market reputation, making it more attractive to potential customers, partners, and investors.
  • Networking: Accelerator cohorts bring together a diverse group of startups and mentors, fostering valuable networking opportunities and potential collaborations that can lead to long-term business partnerships.
  • Intensive learning environment: Accelerators often organize workshops, seminars, and boot camps to accelerate learning and equip startups with essential skills in areas like marketing, product development, and sales.

For corporations

  • Open innovation: Startup accelerators offer corporations a streamlined approach to identify and collaborate with innovative startups that can potentially address their industry challenges or complement existing product/service offerings.
  • Access to emerging technologies: Partnering with startups can provide corporations access to cutting-edge technologies and solutions that can enhance their products, services, or internal processes.

2022 Leaplab edition: Pilot outcomes https://www.cemexventures.com/leaplab-2022-pilot-outcomes/ Wed, 12 Jul 2023 08:19:51 +0000 https://www.cemexventures.com/?p=97377

According to recent data, almost 90% of all startups fail. Why? Because of common mistakes such as targeting the wrong market or conducting insufficient research, along with a lack of expertise, funding, or a proper marketing strategy.

To a certain extent, every entrepreneur is the pilot of his/her startup, steering the company to success and navigating difficult turbulence.  And next to every great pilot is his or her co-pilot. So, why not mitigate the risks of entrepreneurship and let Cemex be your co-pilot and trusted partner as you grow your business and validate your solution in real markets?

For startups, the final product is often very different from the original concept, and the time it takes to get from start to finish can take time, even years. Commercial piloting helps startups reduce the time it takes to get their solutions market-ready, optimizing both time and resources.

For corporate innovators, piloting can help big businesses with complex operations understand how a new solution can be applied in practice and in real-time. Piloting an early-stage solution can also mean working in close collaboration with startups to improve, add, or remove functionalities to personalize the technology or solution to the business’s needs.

Pilots help startups get to market faster and ensure that corporations find accurate solutions tailored to their specific challenges.

2022 pilot outcomes

In November 2022, we launched the 1st edition of Cemex Ventures Leaplab, our exclusive accelerator for high-potential early-stage startups. The Leaplab Acceleration Program connected 5 startups (also known as the 2022 cohort) with Cemex business units in 6 countries. The 2022 cohort carried out 14-week pilots to validate their solutions, during which the startups were able to network with one another and maintain a close relationship with Cemex, receiving one-on-one mentoring and educational sessions (Master Talks) from the company’s construction & business experts.

Here are the main take aways from each pilot, but keep reading for an in-depth review of each challenge & solution the startups aimed to solve at Cemex:

AEInnova

Challenge: Many industries face pressure to digitalize to become more efficient and sustainable, and construction is no exception. However, one of the barriers of digitalizing assets and processes is the high cost of wired sensors and the environmental impact of battery-powered monitoring devices.

Solution: AEInnova has developed a solution in response to this challenge and developed a self-powered battery-less IoT wireless sensor network that generates its own energy from waste heat, resulting in a clean and sustainable electricity. By using their patented thermoelectric technology, their solution eliminates the need for costly and resource intensive lithium batteries. Their end-to-end solution, from sensors to software, permits a simple and quick implementation of sensors used for industrial equipment monitoring.

AEInnova x Cemex Pilot Result: AEInnova’s pilot consisted of installing 5 sensors to monitor the functionality and state of auxiliary equipment and quickly detect potential anomalies that can lead to disruptions in the production process if unattended to. As part of the functionality tests in the pilot, Cemex applied different methods to generate tensions in the sensors. This included the opportunity to compare the AEInnova sensor with an existing wired sensor previously installed in the control system. From the results, we confirmed the consistency in measurements and the reliability of the captured data.

By eliminating lithium batteries, AEInnova sensors reduce the environmental impact of such devices up to 90%. Moreover, their technology leads up to a 70% cost reduction in planned maintenance by mitigating the risk of unexpected failures. On average, the system can generate a 40% reduction in downtime, as well as the potential to reduce digitalization costs by more than 80% compared to complex wired systems. The validation enabled through this pilot opens a very interesting field for us by confirming stable coverage of this solution in facilities with large installations where most of the infrastructure is metal-based.

Ception

Challenge: Heavy equipment such as trucks, bulldozers, or loaders are essential to construction & mining, but they have some major challenges related to safety, productivity, and sustainability.

Solution: To address these issues, Ception has developed a novel AI-powered system to create a deep understanding of heavy vehicles’ contexts and surroundings in real time by using advanced computer vision, deep-learning algorithms, sensor fusion, and more. Ception’s solution’s in-cabin system helps heavy machinery operators determine the optimal loading approach and receive live alerts about dangerous situations (e.g., near cliffs, obstacles, or disrupted ways). At the same time, site managers can receive a full analysis of safety events, productivity bottlenecks, and site information such as the 3D volume of stockpiles.

Ception x Cemex Pilot Result: Ception’s solution was tested in 6 different Ready-Mix and Aggregates sites in Israel and effectively worked to predict and indicate 3 safety hazard types: person, vehicle, and heavy vehicle. The alerts were only generated in truly risky situations and were prioritized by urgency. Ception’s Collision Warning system proved a 40% reduction in near-miss events, and their Smart Dumping System offers a potential productivity increase of 35% due to maneuver optimization, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The pilot also allowed Ception to further develop and test its mapping and analytics capabilities of non-drivable areas. The most relevant benefit validated from the pilot was the mitigation of safety risks on site. Other benefits included the opportunity to review near misses at the plant, allowing Health & Safety managers to learn from them, and the enhanced productivity of heavy vehicles.

Cloud Cycle

Challenge: In the ready-mix industry, one major challenge is the visibility of the mix conditions when concrete is in transit to the customer’s site, which can negatively affect the quality and usability of the concrete mix.

Solution: Cloud Cycle has developed software and sensors that can be installed quickly in ready-mix trucks, effectively turning them into “mobile labs”. Once Cloud Cycle’s sensors are installed, they can produce accurate and consistent readings in real-time, providing ready-mix teams with data and visibility of the quality of every delivery from batch to pour.

Cloud Cycle x Cemex Pilot Result: The Leaplab program pilot with Cloud Cycle was executed among Cemex’s ready-mix London fleet. Through the online real-time data dashboard, the Cemex UK ready-mix team was able to track 100% of concrete deliveries and ensure they fulfilled the correct specifications before arriving onsite. This was a great opportunity for Cemex to test a cost-effective, reliable, and scalable product tailored to their needs.

Qsee

Challenge: Enhancing productivity to reduce costs and improve quality, sustainability, and customer experience is a major concern in the construction industry, which has historically been slower to digitalize compared to other industries.

Solution: Qsee’s Software as a Service (SaaS) optimizes production processes through prescriptive analytics and a unique closed-loop technology, powered by Artificial Intelligence.

Qsee x Cemex Pilot Result: The main objective of this Leaplab pilot was to apply and test Qsee’s solution for a real-time prediction of core KPIs in the cement production process and real-time prescription around parameters closely linked to target values for selected KPIs. Qsee’s technology was tested in Cemex cement plants in Huichapan (Mexico), Miami (US), and Castillejo (Spain) to get diverse learnings from different operational conditions. Results from the pilot include learnings around the potential in the application of AI-powered technologies to increase our production processes’ efficiency. Furthermore, Qsee can support Cemex’s operational goals with the live prediction of key variables in the manufacturing journey and precise prescriptions in real-time for correlated variables that can guarantee specific values for targeted KPIs.

Ruedata

Challenge: Tires are fleets’ most important cost after fuel. They represent a significant part of associated expenses due to maintenance, mechanical failures, and purchase inefficiencies that also translate to safety and environmental issues. The tires importance for road safety and cost control makes them an essential piece of successful fleet management.

Solution: Ruedata has created a Software as a Service (SaaS) that uses predictive analytics and machine learning algorithms to understand how tires wear out and based on that optimize maintenance plans, reduce costs, and increase safety.

Ruedata x Cemex Pilot Result: Ruedata’s solution was tested in the entire Cemex Colombia’s supply chain fleet. Some of the proven benefits include up to 30% tire cost reduction. Moreover, their system demonstrated an opportunity for simplifying the tire management process, centralizing the related information and using it efficiently to improve traceability in the operations. The SaaS can also enhance fleet maintenance and tire purchasing plans by using data and indicators from the software to send alerts linked to tire pressure levels, accelerated wear, and possible mechanical failures.

Is investment the most effective way to support a new startup? 80% of entrepreneurs interviewed in 2022 told CEMEX Ventures “Yes.” However, those same entrepreneurs also deemed it mandatory to receive other means of support, such as mentorship from CEMEX’s network of experts and resources from its open innovation platform.

The amount being invested in the construction industry is increasing year on year, which is fascinating when you consider that the sector has seen little change in its innovation ratios over the past decades.

From 2015 to 2017, investment in construction technology startups increased ever so slightly from $0.8Bn to $1.0Bn USD, whereas since 2019, investment in Contech startups has almost quintupled (5x) from $1.1Bn to $5.38Bn USD (end of 2019 – end of 2022).

2022 Leaplab Cohort: Program Status

What’s happening in the Leaplab accelerator program?

In its inaugural edition, CEMEX Ventures Leaplab is connecting its 2022 cohort, consisting of five trailblazing early-stage startups, with CEMEX’s business units in six countries during an intensive 14-week period. During these weeks, Leaplab has hosted Mentoring Sessions to improve each startups’ day-to-day operations, as well as Master Talks. These special one-hour sessions are hosted by a diverse group made up of CEMEX and CEMEX Ventures experts, established entrepreneurs with success stories, and key players in the ecosystem.

Leaplab’s Mentoring Sessions aim to strategically guide the growth of each early-stage startups. This year’s program included mentors from the following CEMEX business areas: Business Strategy, Human Resources, Commercial Development, Sustainability, Health & Safety, Process & IT, and last but not least, Corporate Venturing. Some of the key themes of these sessions were centered around:

  • Enterprise and operations to improve the core of each business. These core sessions touch on disciplines such as negotiation and leadership, guidance on profit modeling and pricing strategies, and support in defining objectives and growth strategies. Most importantly, in these sessions each startup and their carefully selected mentor discuss their go-to-market strategy (i.e., tactics in the ideation phases until the release of a product or service through agile models).
  • Customer-centric design (UX). Using UX methodologies, startups highlight their value proposition for their customers, search for needs and improvements, and validate their business models with key assets with audiences.
  • Technology and compliance. Themes such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and machine learning protocols, and compatibility and integration with interfaces (e.g., API, obsolescence, data consumption, etc.) are discussed in these sessions. Startups will also assess Cloud models and all regulations relevant to their operation.
  • Networking. As the fourth cornerstone of the Leaplab acceleration program, networking is where the importance of relationships and collaboration within the ecosystem are highlighted, between the cohort startups themselves, and with other startups in CEMEX Ventures’ portfolio, external investors, companies that promote innovation, and CEMEX customers.

On the other hand, our Master Talks were specifically designed to showcase CEMEX success stories and experts. The 2022 edition featured relevant and interdisciplinary subjects such as economic evaluation models, planning, sustainability, human resources, and marketing. Some of the keynote presentations were:

  • How to work successfully with companies
  • What Corporate Venture Capitals and Venture Capitals look for when investing in startups
  • Sustainability as a strategic attribute behind all solutions
  • Sourcing strategy and best practices for participating in a bidding process
  • Brand and reputation management
  • Purpose, partnerships and how to attract the best talent

What our cohort has to say

Don’t take it from us. Why not go straight to the source? Here’s what the five entrepreneurs in our first Leaplab edition had to say about their experience in the accelerator so far.

What lies ahead?

There are just a few sessions left to go before we reach the end of the intensive 14-week program. In March, we will be holding our first Demo Day, which is the final program phase where each of the 5 startups will graduate and present the results of their pilots to CEMEX’s Executive Committee.

At this point, other types of negotiations will begin, with the understanding that collaboration can take place in many ways depending on the nature of the business model, the location of the startups, the needs of CEMEX, and of course, the results of the pilots.

Stay tuned for the results of Demo Day by following us on LinkedIn and Twitter and make sure to check out the CEMEX Ventures Leaplab webpage for more information.
